Tim McDonald This Week at WorldGolf.com: March 15, 2005

Aye, there's nought anything in the bonny world of golf that makes architects gush like the old courses of Scotland. From the old masters to the new modernists, the old courses have been inspirations to most of them and have influenced golf course architecture for generations.

Ron Garl, in his monthly architecture column for WorldGolf.com, takes you to Royal Troon to tell you about one of his favorite holes in the world and one of the most influential. It’s so influential in fact, that Garl incorporated it into his award-winning replica course at Golden Ocala in Florida.

The short, par-3 eight hole -- at 126 yards from the back tees, it is the shortest in the British Open venues -- is the original "postage stamp" green, measuring only eight paces with pot bunkers all around and a large sand dune to the left. Garl explains why it may be the first "island" par-3, well before Pete Dye made that description famous, and why the hole has had such a lasting influence on course design through the years.

Let us know your thoughts on old-school courses, clue us in to the best undiscovered jewels in Scotland, or just give us your comments about WorldGolf.com.

Brian PavletMeet the Babe Ruth
of the golf course

Watching Brian Pavlet hit a golf ball is like watching Babe Ruth or Barry Bonds smash a baseball -- you can't help but marvel at their strength and power. One of the game's greatest sluggers, Pavlet has been wowing clients with his clinics since winning his first world long drive championship in1993. Don't be fooled, though, Pavlet's no gorilla who can't play golf and can only hit the ball far with juiced equipment.

Caledonia Golf and Fish ClubMyrtle Beach still reigns

Perhaps nowhere else in the world is the golf course-to-land-area ratio as dense as in Myrtle Beach, S.C. Still, there are signs the King's crown is growing heavy. With land becoming more valuable than some golf businesses, some courses are selling out, while others are struggling. The good news is that it's now a buyer's market.
