For men on Valentine's Day: The right gift could improve your golf game
There is no doubt that women have carved their own slice of golf's pie over the years. In so many instances, the fairer sex is as much a part of this game as their male counterparts.
But this golf column isn't for women. Ladies, please leave. We'll wait ...
Ok, now that it's just us guys, let's talk. Mainly, I'm speaking to you married men out there that are avid golfers. You guys that manage to sneak in three rounds a week or more, yet still manage to keep a happy marriage. We're coming up to payback day, guys, and it's not a day to let slip by.
Because guys, it comes down to this: Valentine's Day is important to women. Whether they've been married six months or 60 years, or whether they swear on a stack of Golf Digests that February 14 is meaningless, the truth is it matters. A lot.
Don't get me wrong. I'm well aware that many men out there have this figured out. But we can take things for granted, us men. Sometimes a primer is necessary, because if you ace Valentine's Day, a year of golfing pleasure can be yours to enjoy.
Because here's the rub: Women don't mind when their husbands go golfing. One, it gets you out of the house and gives them some peace and quiet. And two, chicks dig it when their guys go do guy stuff.
The trick here is to combine both the game you love with something wonderful for the woman you love. And at this time of year, it's certainly a doable proposition.
The options are endless. For instance, Sea Trail Golf Resort in Sunset Beach, N.C., has a Valentine's Day special that includes accommodations in a one-bedroom villa, two roses delivered and a special candlelight dinner. Or look into a stay at a spa. Women freakin' lose it for spas, after all. If you're in Miami, try out the Aveda Spa at Don Shula's Hotel. Wherever you're located, a weekend at a spa near great golf means everyone's a winner.
Remember guys, this is just a reminder. You know what your lady likes, and you can make her Valentine's Day special with just a little forethought. She'll love you all the more for it, and you'll be rewarded with many more days on the golf course, with a happy wife that doesn't mind you being out there.
As always, WorldGolf.com welcomes your comments.
Sometimes a golfer just wants it to be them and the golf course -- golfer versus nature, pure and simple. Unfortunately, most courses are dotted with homes and condos. That's why playing those rare courses free of real estate on their fairways and greens can be such a pleasure. Here are some of Myrtle Beach's best "natural" runs.

Many have decried that runaway technology is ruining the game of golf. With such modern clubs as the Nike Sasquatch or the MacGregor MacTec NVG2, average players are now cranking out 250-yard drives that split the fairway. Here, William K. Wolfrum takes the opposite view: better technology and better clubs are the best thing that's ever happened to golfers.
